Michelin puts the brakes on activities in Russia

CLERMONT-FERRAND, France—Michelin is suspending its industrial activity in Russia, as well as exports to the country in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Michelin has halted production of passenger tires and truck retreads at its 18-year-old factory in Davydovo, where it employs 750. Plant capacity is listed as 6,000 units per day, intended primarily for the domestic market.

"In this very difficult and uncertain context, Michelin's priority is to support all of its employees who are impacted by this crisis, including its Michelin Russia employees," the company said.

The French group did not provide further details but said it "remains fully mobilized and will continue to adapt its decisions as the situation evolves."

Earlier this month, Michelin said it was suspending production at some of its European plants "for a few days" due to the impact of the Ukraine war on supply-chains.

"Like many industrial players in Europe, the Michelin Group is also facing major logistical and transportation issues in supplying its plants and delivering to customers," Michelin said March 3.

Michelin also announced that it was analyzing "in real time" the sanctions that the international community implemented and is already complying with those in effect.

Michelin joins Bridgestone Corp. and Continental A.G. as major international tire makers to halt operations in Russia.

Nokian Tyres P.L.C. continues to alter its global production and distribution while maintaining safety for its employees in Ukraine and Russia.

Pirelli & C. S.p.A., which operates two plants there, said it is "continuing its activities while monitoring the situation through a permanent crisis committee." It also donated $550,000 to help Ukrainian refugees stricken by the war.

Titan International Inc. and Yokohama Rubber Co. Ltd. have yet to comment specifically on what actions they've taken or plant to take.
