Antares-brand light truck tires recalled

WASHINGTON — China's Zhaoqing Junhong Co. Ltd. is recalling an as-yet undisclosed number of Antares Comfort A5 light truck tires because of a potential belt failure issue.

The recall—covering the Antares Comfort A5 in size LT265/75R16 10PR 123/120S—was disclosed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in an Aug. 24 communique.

The suspect tires were produced between Sept. 14 and Nov. 19, 2015, at Zhaoqing, Guangdong-based Zhaoqing Junhong' factory in Zhaoqing.

The company said the affected product could experience belt separation, and as such does not comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 139, "New Pneumatic Radial Tires for Light Vehicles."

The company—which also goes to market under the "Maxtrek Tires" identity—tied the potential tread separation to a set of curing presses in the factory that were out of spec during the time frame cited. This likely resulted in the tires' being overcured, the company said.

The presses were brought into proper operating specs during routine maintenance at that time, the firm added.
