Sumitomo recalls certain Falken Pro touring tires

RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif.—Sumitomo Rubber USA L.L.C. is recalling a limited number of Falken Pro G5 CSV performance luxury touring tires due to a manufacturing anomaly that prevented proper curing of the tread base rubber, which could lead to a tread separation and an increased risk of a crash.

The Falken Pro G5 CSV is distributed exclusively through Discount Tire/America's Tire.

The recall covers 5,814 tires in four sizes—235/65R17 104V; 235/65R18 106V; 245/50 R20 102V; and 265/50 R20 111—of which 6 percent are estimated to have been produced with compound mixture containing an inadequate sulfur level in the tread base compound, which prevented proper curing of the tread base rubber, Sumitomo said in notices published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The tires were built during the ninth week of 2022 at Sumitomo's plant in Tonawanda, N.Y. As such, the tires' sidewall DOT identification data include the plant's code 1DA and the production code 0922.

The tread may chunk or separate from the tire. If the tread separation occurs in a manner that affects vehicle stability, there may be an increased risk of a crash.

SRNA said it there have been no reports of injuries related to this condition.

Dealers will replace the tires, free of charge, through April 18, 2023. SRNA said it expects to mail notification letters to owners of the tires Oct. 3. Owners may contact Falken tire's customer service at 877-763-0416.

Owners who registered their tires will be notified directly by mail. For those owners who did not register their tires, SRUSA will work with Discount Tire to obtain owner information, where available.
