LONDON—Pirelli Motorsports has agreed to add another racing series to its already extensive motorsports portfolio.
Formula One Management Ltd., the company handling the commercial aspects of the global Formula 1 championship, has created a racing series for female drivers that it envisions as a stepping stone into top-flight formula car competition.
The series, dubbed F1 Academy, fills a void created by the demise last year of the W Series, a similar venture that had offered female drivers opportunities since 2019. It folded last year, about two-thirds of the way through its fourth season.
The new series will use Taatus single-seat, open-wheel chassis similar to that which was used in the W Series but with Pirelli tires instead of Hankook.
The new series is designed to provide young talent in junior categories with access to the fundamental level of experience needed to progress to Formula 3, which could lead to Formula 2 and eventually F1.
