LUXEMBOURG—Goodyear is claiming an industry first, saying it is the first company to bring to market a tire with verifiable winter tire traction and top-rated low rolling resistance.
The tire—a new all-season line designated for original equipment fitment later this year with French car maker PSA Groupe—carries the tire industry's 3-Peak Mountain Snowflake (3PMSF) designation for winter traction as well as a "A" rating for low rolling resistance under the European Union's tire labeling regulations.
Goodyear did not identify which model has gained this distinction; the company's current all-season offerings in Europe are sold under the Vector line. The tire is designated for OE fitment on the 2021 Peugeot 2008/3008/5008 compact SUVs, DS3 and DS7 Crossback; additional fitments are expected as well.
Goodyear calls this achievement—combining a traction level to meet the severe snow 3PMSF requirement, while also delivering rolling resistance performance—as "significant" and representative of its efforts to develop products that fit the company's vision of future mobility solutions.
The project represents a cross-functional collaboration between Goodyear's technology teams in Luxembourg and Germany, the company said, leveraging recent tread pattern developments and new rubber-compounding formulations.
"This project is a great example of anticipating the needs of the customer, demonstrating our technical superiority, and converting advanced technology into customer benefits," Xavier Fraipont, Goodyear's vice president of EMEA product development, said in a statement.
