To try to better understand the mechanism of 6PPD (hexyl phenyl para-phenylene diamine) for protection of NR (natural rubber) against oxygen and ozone attack, we measured the kinetics as a function of temperature. The rates and activation energies provided insight into how 6PPD protects natural rubber.

The oxidation kinetics were measured using the ultra-sensitive oxidation technique published by Ken Gillen from Sandia National Labs. The ozone degradation kinetics were measured by deterioration in tensile properties as a function of time. The work helped to understand how to develop replacement antioxidants and antiozonants.
