Today matters because tomorrow matters even more.
Across the tire and rubber industries, businesses understand that the practices and decisions they implement today determine how successful—and how healthy—tomorrow becomes. As industry leaders commit to sustainable mobility and a healthier planet, tire makers are focusing on establishing more efficient operations and designing better products.
"Hankook Tire has always operated with the mindset of contributing toward a better world," Sooil Lee, CEO and president of Hankook Tire & Technology Co., said in an email interview. "Throughout the 80 years of Hankook Tire's existence, we have been focused on sustainability from the deepest parts of our business."
Today, tire makers say, that deeply rooted focus on sustainability is critical. They are feeling a much more urgent need to lead manufacturing and transportation in reducing carbon emissions and protecting the environment.
Climate has a lot to do with that. Global temperatures are rising, oceans are warmer, sea levels are higher and carbon dioxide levels continue to grow.
Since 1880, global temperatures have risen 2.12°F, and 19 of the warmest years on record have occurred since 2000, according to NASA. Rising temperatures, NASA said, are driven largely by increased levels of carbon dioxide emissions.
Those CO2 levels are the highest they have been in the last 650,000 years.
Addressing these issues requires a commitment to reducing CO2 emissions, establishing more efficient manufacturing operations and producing tires that not only help to shape a better future, but help to shape the way the industry uses end-of-life products.
