HOUSTON—Continental Carbon Co. locations in Ponca City, Okla.; and Sunray, Texas, have earned ISCC Plus certification for their circular carbon black.
"This certification is yet again further recognition of CCC's commitment to improving the environmental footprint of CCC's products and to help customers meet their sustainability goals," the company stated in an Aug. 20 release. "This achievement and our commitment to sustainability follows our recent announcement of our JV formation."
The joint venture in Phenix City, Ala., will be housed in a facility that had been a tire tread-grade carbon black facility for CCC from the early 1980s until the plant's mandated closure in December 2023.
In reopening, CCC will partner with Taiwanese firm Sheico Group to produce recovered carbon black at the Phenix City facility.
Operations for the JV between CCC (35 percent) and Sheico Group (65 percent) are expected to begin sometime in 2026. The plant will employ between 60 and 100 people.
CCC's parent company, the China Synthetic Rubber Corp., approved the May 13 partnership with Eco Infinic Co. Ltd., a Thailand subsidiary of Sheico Group, to produce rCB, oil and steel cord via tire pyrolysis.
The ISCC Plus certifications for Ponca City and Sunray denote a range of circular feedstocks for CB production, including pre-consumer and post-consumer oil residues, plant-based oils and recovered oils.
Traceability for CCC will increase through its supply chain, using a mass balance approach.
