TOKYO—To more fully support its sustainability efforts and establish itself as a responsible corporate citizen, Sumitomo Chemical has stepped up its efforts to foster human rights within the company and throughout its supply chain.
The company has enacted a human rights policy, which uses the United Nation's Principles on Business and Human Rights as a foundation, to support it ongoing efforts of sustainability.
"Today, society calls for companies to strengthen efforts toward respecting human rights, not only within their own business group, but throughout their entire value chain," Sumitomo Chemical said in a June 18 statement.
To this end, the firm also has established a Human Rights Promotion Committee that comprises employees from a variety of departments, working with stakeholders and business partners throughout the supply chain. These leaders, Sumitomo said, "will play a central role in the company's endeavor to conduct human rights due diligence" as they open discussions with key stakeholders and partners and work to ensure that the policies and expectations set forth by company are met, especially in regards to human rights.
