HOUSTON—Orion Engineered Carbons S.A. debuted a surface-modified carbon black for rubber applications at the International Elastomer Conference in Cleveland on Oct. 9.
Hauke Westenberg, compounding manager from Orion's Innovation Group, will present a paper, "Surface Modified Carbon Black for Modern Low Rolling Resistance Tires," that will describe the new product.
Orion said the new carbon black filler system reduces the energy loss of a tire tread compound and therefore the tire rolling resistance, which in turn increases fuel efficiency and reduces the tire's carbon footprint. These products have also demonstrated cutting-edge abrasion resistance in sophisticated laboratory evaluations, according to the company.
"We are proud of Dr. Westenberg's work, which perfectly reflects our core values of customer focus, innovation and sustainability," Orion CEO Corning Painter said in a statement. "Tire manufacturers now have a powerful new tool to develop more durable, energy-saving and therefore more sustainable tires."
