Chevron Phillips Chemical Co. has received seven annual safety awards from the American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers.
The company's plant in Borger, Texas, was honored with AFPM's top Distinguished Safety Award, which celebrates companies with lasting safety performance at the highest levels. This marked the first time the Borger plant received this recognition, officials with Chevron Phillips in The Woodlands, Texas, said in an Aug. 10 news release.
Overall, four Chevron Phillips Chemical plants in Texas achieved high marks by AFPM for 2019 safety performance. In addition to Borger, Chevron Phillips plants in Conroe, Orange and Port Arthur, Texas, received the Safety Achievement Award. That award honors sites that attain an employee and contractor total recordable incident rate of 0.35 or less in a given year.
The Conroe and Orange plants also received the Elite Silver Safety Award, presented to the top 5 percent of U.S. refining and petrochemical plants based on personal and process safety results.
"Our dedicated employees and contractors across the company continue to focus their efforts on operational excellence, especially during such challenging times due to COVID-19," said Kate Holzhauser, vice president of environment, health, safety and security.
"These recognitions reaffirm the importance of the company's Our Journey to Zero strategy to shape our safety and operating culture and drive continuous improvement by caring for one another, our customers and the communities where we operate," she added.
Chevron Phillips makes HDPE resin in Orange; plastic feedstocks ethylene, propylene and cyclohexane in Port Arthur and specialty chemicals in Borger and Conroe.
Chevron Phillips is a leading producer of polyethylene and other specialty plastics and chemicals. The 5,000-employee firm is a joint venture between Chevron Corp. and Phillips 66.
Officials said Chevron Phillips retains a top-quartile safety record among peer member companies for combined employee and contractor recordable incident rates, based on data reported by the American Chemistry Council's (ACC) Responsible Care program.
The firm also is active in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's Voluntary Protection Program, with all 18 U.S. facilities designated as OSHA VPP Star Sites. In addition, Chevron Phillips was the 2019 recipient of ACC's Responsible Care Initiative of the Year Award for its Our Journey to Zero strategy.
