MUMBAI, India—Birla Carbon has released its annual sustainability report, highlighting progress in operational excellence, innovation and safety measures.
The company said it had been awarded a gold rating by EcoVadis rating agency for the third year in a row, having screened 100 percent of its suppliers for compliance.
The Indian carbon black producer also reported that 70 percent of its sites completed the year without a "recordable injury" after the introduction of its "serious injury and fatality initiative" at six key operation areas. The initative covers lockout-tagout, working at heights, mobile equipment, electrical, hot work and confined spaces, and promotes near-miss reporting within the company.
Birla said it has reinvested 3.5 percent of its profit in research and development, and established a global information sharing program for recording product quality issues and devising solutions.
In terms of energy consumption, Birla said 75 percent of its facilities are "energy positive," with 11 plants making energy-related investments in the fiscal 2019.
Birla Carbon CEO Santrupt B. Misra said he hoped that his company would remain a preferred partner to its customers as a result of its sustainability efforts.
