Silicone workshop set for August, hosted by R.D. Abbott

GARDEN GROVE, Calif.—A materials engineering firm that works extensively in silicone will host a workshop for silicone fabricators Aug. 22-25 in Ohio.

R.D. Abbott Co. Inc. will host "Manufacturing with Silicone Rubber," featuring two days of classes at Bounce Innovation Hub in Akron and two days of hands-on instruction at the company's nearby Barberton, Ohio, service and innovation center.

Craig Lustek, application engineer, and Rick Ziebell, vice president of technology and technical fellow will conduct the classes and instruction.

"R.D. Abbott looks forward to hosting this comprehensive training," said Jerry McCall, vice president of sales and marketing. "This workshop will review manufacturing with silicone rubber from a fabricator's point-of-view while leveraging the new research and development laboratories R.D. Abbott opened last year."

Attendees will receive classroom instruction Aug. 22-23 on silicone "sources, uses, properties and key processing characteristics; an overview of molding, extrusion and calendering for silicone fabrication methods; and silicone testing for characterizing cured and uncured properties."

LSR will be a main focus of the workshop, with properties, meter mixing and dispensing, injection molding equipment and processing parameters as specific topics.

The last two days will feature suggestions on troubleshooting the injection molding process and testing silicone's physical properties. Materials will include Dow performance silicones and other materials from NovationSi, an R.D. Abbott production subsidiary.

In addition to Ziebell and Lustek, Bob Pelletier, operations manager for Elmet North America Inc.; Marcus Hardt, senior application engineer for Arburg, Inc.; Dana King, sales engineer for Kipe Molds, Inc.; and Richard Hanzlik, application engineer for Alpha Technologies, will instruct.

Arburg and Elmet injection molding machines and other equipment from the aforementioned companies will be used during this workshop.
