Elkem develops tin-free catalysts for RTV 2 silicones

OSLO, Norway—Elkem Silicones has developed a new tin-free catalyst system for room temperature vulcanizing (RTV 2) silicones.

Nykat is used for standard condensation curing silicones RTV-2 for molding applications, Elkem said in a May 22 statement, without offering further details."Some of the organic tin compounds that are used as catalysts for the condensation reaction for the RTV-2 are now restricted in use due to their toxicity," the Norwegian silicones supplier said.

The tin-free catalyst system, Elkem added, will create a safer working environment for customers.

RTV silicone is a type of silicone rubber made from a two-component system and can be cured either with a platinum catalyst (addition curing) or a tin compound (condensation curing).
