Full disclosure: I may have stolen a car.

    But only briefly.

    Let me explain.

It all starts with a set of mediocre OE tires. I wasn't a fan. In fact, when I bought my car, I asked if I could get different tires. They said that was the first time anyone had asked. And no.

But they did throw in Scotchgard for my seats at no extra charge.

So, for more than four years, I've had iced-coffee-repellent upholstery and a set of solid C+ tires.

And I have been waiting for the chance to fix that. I knew exactly what I wanted. Something that would handle well in the snow, provide traction year-round, help manage my fuel efficiency and last for a while.

Just before Christmas, my tread-depth hit the 2/32nd mark, so I called our family's mechanic to schedule an appointment.

"Pheeeew," he said with a low whistle when I told him which tire brand and model I wanted. "Those are some good tires."

"Yep. Three-peak-mountain-snowflake rated, all-season tires." And the tread pattern? *chef's kiss*

The day of my appointment, the garage was running a bit behind. It would be a few hours before they got to me, so they insisted I take the loaner car, get some lunch and just enjoy the day.

"It's the silver one," he said, "parked next to the white truck." I tossed a quick look out the window and saw a silver "loaner" right where he said it would be.

Once I stepped outside, though, I saw there were two silver cars flanking the white truck. And I had no idea which was the loaner and which was a client's waiting to be fixed.

In my defense, I did try to clarify, but the office and garage were empty. My mechanic and his brother had both gone to lunch—disappeared during my 80 seconds of confusion.

So, faced with a 50/50 proposition, I made a choice. The keys were in it, so I was mostly sure I chose the correct car and drove it around town for more than three hours.

    Like 70 percent sure.

What I am 100-percent certain of, though, is that I chose the right tires for my car. The difference in quality is astounding.

The new tires handle beautifully, corner phenomenally, ride smoothly and so, so quietly.

I thought I needed new brakes. Nope. I needed new tires—better tires. The stopping distance compared to my former set—especially in wet conditions—has surprised me the most.

Many assume that all tires are created equal. A tire is a tire, right?

    No.

Every bit of engineering that goes into a tire, from its materials to its tread pattern, changes everything. The performance, the safety, the sustainability. That's why the right tire is so important. Every detail matters.

    Just like with loaner cars.

"It's the silver one, parked to the right of the white truck."
