As a "tire guy," I agree that tires are extremely reliable and the vast majority of motorists never experience an air-out disablement.
However, when dealing with the range of uncontrolled conditions tires must operate under, the macro statistics used to justify OEM's decision to eliminate the spare does not address the real-world insecurities and needs of the individual behind the wheel. Tires are one of the safest but most misunderstood components on the vehicle, and one can expect some unease about not offering the ability to install a spare.
Many of you may have had experiences with friends or others who ask you for your expert opinion regarding the safety of their tires. People have actually asked me to inspect their tires in a driveway for a safety opinion. I always refuse such requests and tell them to see a tire dealer for a proper inspection, knowing that a vehicle is nothing more than a lawsuit on wheels.
