AKRON—Joseph D. Walter has been recognized with the 2022 Tire Society Distinguished Service Award.
The Tire Society will present the award Sept. 12 at its 41st Annual Meeting and Conference at the University of Akron by past President Jerry Potts. The award recognizes individuals who have made significant impacts on the tire science community through their services.
Walter is retired, most recently as an adjunct professor with the University of Akron's Mechanical Engineering Department, and before that as president and managing director of Bridgestone's European Technical Center in Rome, Italy. He began his career with Firestone after completing his doctorate from Virginia Tech in 1966.
Walter was a member of the original body—the Technical Advisory Committee for Tires (TACT) founded in 1967—whose initiative led to the eventual creation of the Tire Society. He served for six years on the Tire Society's Executive Committee, and he has served as a session chair and has received the honorable mention paper award.
