WASHINGTON—Sumitomo Rubber USA L.L.C. is recalling limited number of Falken Wildpeak AT4W tires, size 275/60R20 115T, that may have been manufactured using an incorrect cord material for one of the plies.
According to the National Highway Safety Transportation Administration (NHTSA), the sidewall label incorrectly identifies the generic name of the cord material, thus meaning the affected tires don't meet labeling requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard, number 139.
NHSTA said that tires manufactured with a incorrect cord material can increase the risk of tire failure, causing a crash.
According to Sumitomo, a review of manufacturing records showed that certain tires, produced between Sept. 29 and Oct. 5, 2024, at Sumitomo's plant in Tonawanda, N.Y., may have been manufactured with one nylon and one polyester ply, rather than two polyester plies as identified on the tire label.
Sumitomo said production and internal records identified that approximately 27 tires using mixed fabrics, within a group of 150 tires, were distributed. All 150 tire are being recalled.
Sumitomo said the mislabeled fabric was scrapped, and the process for labeling was corrected to ensure correct ply materials were used.
Dealers will replace the tires, free of charge. Letters notifying owners are expected to be mailed Nov. 21. Owners may contact Sumitomo customer service at 877-763-0416.
