OSWIECIM, Poland—Synthos S.A. and Sumitomo Rubber Industries Ltd. (SRI) are working together to create a circular, more sustainable future, the companies said.
The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding effective Nov. 19 to promote the usage of Synthos rubber powders in sustainable Sumitomo tires.
Synthos R&D Director Malte Wohlfahrt said that the company's TyreXol-brand rubber powder technology will be instrumental in helping both Synthos and Sumitomo reach their collective goals.
"Our R&D team is constantly looking for solutions that help our customers achieve their sustainability goals," Wohlfahrt said in a statement. "I am personally encouraged to see that closed loop solutions are increasingly part of the innovation and technology development conversations we are having with our customers. Synthos is honored to count SRI among its strategic partners, as they actively seek ways to keep valuable end-of-life raw materials in their material cycle to achieve innovative solutions that are part of the circular economy."
With the technology ready to deploy, Synthos is confident that it will be able to achieve the circularity goals it has set, Wohlfahrt said. The company hopes to "enables a significant improvement in the environmental footprint of tires, without compromising tire safety, durability and rolling resistance," officials said.
Poland-based Synthos has received ISCC Plus certification for its entire portfolio of synthetic rubber products across production facilities in Germany, the Czech Republic and Poland, the company said. The company operates as the largest producer of synthetic rubber in Europe, and aims to support tire makers in their pursuit of sustainability.
