AKRON—The University of Akron Formula SAE Team took eighth place out of 89 at Formula SAE Michigan last year, including top 10 finishes in the Endurance and Design events. This year, the team will return to the Formula One-style race with Smithers' support.
The Akron-based testing firm said June 12 that it will sponsor the university team, which has participated in SAE International's student racing competition for more than 30 years.
Through this competition, students are challenged to incorporate classroom knowledge into effective automotive designs by designing, building and racing a Formula One-style racecar, Smithers said in a June 12 news release.
The team's return to Formula SAE Michigan also includes competitions in Austria, Hungary and Germany. Smithers' sponsorship will support the team's design and creation of a racecar, as well as shipping costs and travel expenses for the overseas competitions.
