Rubber News named Ohio's 'Best Trade Publication'

CLEVELAND—The editorial staff of Rubber News was named Best Trade Publication in Ohio during an awards ceremony June 10 for the Press Club of Cleveland's All-Ohio Excellence in Journalism Awards.

Collectively, the staff received 15 awards—including five first-place honors—in the competition, which was for work published in 2021.

"I am extremely proud of our staff for their hard work and dedication. The topics covered in these pieces include all the big issues facing our readership, including supply chain difficulties, electric vehicles, diversity and sustainability," Editor Bruce Meyer said. "We are continually working on providing the news our readers need to know, and delivering it across both our print and digital platforms."

Besides the award for Best Trade Publication, the other honors included:

• Covers: Trade & Professional Publication: Art director Michael McCrady, first place, for his design of our Oct. 18 issue featuring stories on robots, supply chain and PPE. He also took third place for his cover on our year-end publication, "The Book."

• Special section/package: Erin Pustay Beaven, Andrew Schunk, Sam Cottrill, Bruce Meyer, first place, "Sustainability: The big ideas and small actions that make a difference;" Andrew Schunk and Bruce Meyer, second place, "Custom Mixing: Does Size Really Matter?"

• General Features: Jennifer Karpus-Romain (former staff member who wrote this as a freelance piece), first place, "Finding the right fit"; Andrew Schunk, second place, "Moving, shaking up the fluid power industry"; Sam Cottrill, third place, "Contract brings nitrile glove maker to U.S."

• Departments or Columns: Erin Pustay Beaven and Bruce Meyer, first place, editorials; Bruce Meyer, "Editor's Viewpoint," second place.

• Trends: Erin Pustay Beaven, second place, "Last Mile, first to adapt." David Manley of sister publication Tire Business took third place in this category for "Last Mile."

• Personality Profile: Bruce Meyer, second place, "Forging an American Dream."

• Trade Report: Erin Pustay Beaven, third place, "Supply chain in shambles."

• Headline writing, all other publications: Bruce Meyer, second place, "Heated debate on a warming climate"; Erin Pustay Beaven, third place, "Last mile, first to adapt."

The Press Club holds the competition annually, and recognizes work done by news organizations based in Ohio. Awards are given out for a wide variety of media, including daily and non-daily newspapers, business publications, television, radio and student-run outlets.
