MILAN—Pirelli Tyre & C. S.p.A. was listed as a leader in sustainability, earning what is claims is the highest ranking in the Dow Jones Sustainability World and Europe indices among auto components and automobile companies.
"The confirmation of Pirelli in the Dow Jones Sustainability indices again this year, with the best results in the sector at the global level, highlights the solidity of our sustainable development strategy," Pirelli Executive Vice Chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera said in a statement. "Ours is a continuous, day-by-day effort, based on actions that are concrete and measurable, to reach the challenging goals we have set, which include the entire value chain."
The Milan-based tire maker—the only tire maker on the list—earned a score of 84 with high marks in several areas including business ethics, attention to human rights, programs, and policies for health and safety in the workplace, ESG management and supply chain.
The Dow Jones index isn't the only entity to recognize the tire maker's steps forward. In September, Pirelli's carbon emissions reduction vision won approval from the Science Based Targets Initiative.
And when it comes to North America, the tire maker is leading on sustainability efforts. Pirelli partnered with The Ray, a non-profit, dedicated to ensuring more sustainable roadways—think: "zero deaths, zero waste, zero carbon and zero impact."
At the same time, the company has earned the approval of the Forest Stewardship Council for its cultivation of natural rubber. It is the first tire maker to earn the recognition and the first to produce a line of tires with the FSC logo.
