FLURHEDEN, Sweden—Pirelli S.p.A. has transitioned its winter test facility, Pirelli Sottozero Centre in Lapland, Sweden, to summer testing, a first for the facility.
The 2.7 million square feet of circuits, sitting on nearly 300 acres of land located 560 miles north of Stockholm, now will serve as a test ground for summer tires because of an increased need for product development, particularly all-season and winter tires, on wet and dry roads.
The center opened in 2017 and expanded a year later. The current layout includes handling circuits, an open test area and tracks with inclines of up to 20 percent. The company has built a dry handling and wet handling circuit for summer use, each three-quarters of a mile long, as well as a quarter-mile straightaway to test both dry and wet braking.
