That said, tires remain at the heart of Michelin. And in 2023, tire sales accounted for 84 percent of its total global sales of $30.6 billion.
"Each of these activities," Chapot said of the individual tire segments, "are driven by economic trends that are somehow different from each other."
Passenger, light truck and two-wheel tires combined to account for 46 percent of the sales last year, with replacement tires accounting for 36 percent. OE for that particular segment accounted for about 10 percent of sales.
Commercial tires represent 20 percent of the group's sales for the quarter, while specialty tires account for about 18 percent.
Non-tire activities—those that would fall primarily in the Around and Beyond Tires arenas—accounted for just 16 percent of the group's sales with fleet service, retail and distribution making up the bulk of that.
And when it comes to the company's geographical footprint—well, sales are balanced there as well, Chapot said.
North America accounted for the greatest portion of Michelin's 2023 sales at 39 percent. Europe was close behind at 35 percent, and the rest of the world accounted for 26 percent of 2023 sales.
