"Forget the $4 per gallon mark, the nation will soon set new all-time record highs, and we could push closer to a national average of $4.50 (per gallon)," Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy, said in a statement.
California, he added, is likely to see gas prices as high as $6 per gallon in the near future. And it's a price point that likely won't see relief any time soon.
As it turns out, the near future is here.
California, on March 28, averaged $5.92 per gallon, according to AAA. Several counties—including Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego—averaged more than $6 per gallon, roughly $1.75 above the national average ($4.25). Mono County had the highest average in the state at $6.75 per gallon.
The national average, meanwhile, continues to climb. It eclipsed the $4.30 mark in mid-March, but fell to $4.25 by March 28. Nonetheless, it marks a significant increase over one month ($3.49) and one year ($2.86) ago.
