Heading to the International Elastomer Conference in Pittsburgh? Make sure these five things are on your to-do list.
1. A can't-miss keynote
Duane Dunston, a professor of cybersecurity at Champlain College, will help kick off the ACS Rubber Division's International Elastomer Conference with his keynote presentation, Virtual or Augmented - What's Your Reality?
The program, set for 9 a.m. Oct. 5, examines how augmented and virtual reality can broaden the appeal of the rubber industry and help overcome the work force challenges it currently faces. AR and VR, for instance, can help create immersive virtual training experiences that someone can bring into their home, into schools and vocational training.
The technology also has the ability to level the playing field, offering opportunities for international training programs for those about to be released from incarceration and drug rehabilitation to create an opportunity to learn a trade skill to prevent the cycle of recidivism that a lack of having a job can perpetuate.
2. Hit the expo floor
When it comes to the IEC, you'll want to be on the expo floor. Make connections, discover new products and see how companies throughout the industry are innovating.
This year's expo features nearly 150 exhibiting companies.
As always, the expo will open with a ceremonial ribbon cutting event, set for 10:30 a.m. Oct. 5.
3. Get Involved!
The success of the Rubber Division is built on the professionals industrywide whose passion calls them to be leaders within the industry and the organization.
From 10-10:30 a.m. Oct. 6, those who have volunteered with the Rubber Division will share some of their personal stories, explain how the Rubber Division helped them grow in their professions and relay opportunities for you to get involved.
4. Science and Technology Award Presentations
The COVID-19 pandemic threw a lot of things off, including the 2020 Spring Technical Meeting. The cancellation of that meeting and the subsequent virtual International Elastomer Conference last year put some award presentations on hold.
The 2020 Science and Technology Award winners were honored during 2021 Spring Technical Meeting, opening the door for the 2021 winners to be recognized during the fall event. These awards will be given during a special event planned for 2-5:30 p.m. Oct. 6.
5. A good run for a good cause
The 5K Walk/Run returns to this year's event line-up with H.M. Royal Inc.'s support.
The run is facilitated by a professional race management group, which ensures the route is well-marked and that each participant's time is given at the turn and finish of the event.
Prizes will be awarded to the top male and female finishers. All participants will receive a long-sleeved t-shirt courtesy of H.M. Royal, Inc. and their sponsors.
The race steps off at 6:30 a.m. Oct. 6.
