OSLO—Four people suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to nearby health care facilities for evaluation following a blaze at Elkem's silicon-based materials plant in Salten, Norway, Dec. 10.
The fire, which forced production stoppages at the site, broke out in a building housing "highly flammable" raw materials, according to Elkem.
The extent of the damage remains unclear.
"We have halted all production and are doing our utmost to assist the emergency services," said Ove Sordahl, plant manager for Elkem Salten. "We are still at an early stage, and it is too soon to be precise on any long-term impacts on production or physical assets."
The Salten plant is claimed to be "one of the world's largest and most modern silicon plants" exporting silicon and fumed silica products worldwide. The facility employs about 200 and has an annual production capacity of around 128,000 metric tons of materials, including 80,000 tons of silicons.
