Cabot adds to Carbon LP series with low PAH product

BOSTON—Cabot Corp. is giving customers a "full suite" of carbon black products for consumer rubber goods, making end-use products a little safer.

The specialty chemicals and materials company is launching the latest addition to its Carbon LP series, a new low polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon product for rubber applications, the Vulcan 3-LP.

"This launch demonstrates our ongoing commitment to develop innovative solutions that respond to the product performance needs of our customers," Valdemir Prodocimo, general manager of Global Industrial Rubber Products, Reinforcement Materials Segment, said in a statement. "The Vulcan 3-LP product broadens our morphology offering for low PAH carbon blacks and can be used as an alternative for high reinforced rubber products that are required to meet growing regulatory guidelines."

The fourth carbon black product to join the series, Vulcan 3-LP will provide customers with a "full suite of carbon black products for the use in applications that require a controlled, very low PAH content," Cabot said.

Engineered for end-use rubber products that need higher levels of reinforcement, strength, abrasion and tearing resistance, Cabot said the Vulcan 3-LP is a pelletized reinforcing carbon black that is manufactured—along with the full Cabot LP series—to yield consistent and low levels of PAH.

The product complies with increasing global regulatory requirements and quality certifications that limit the content of the chemical compound in certain rubber products, it added.

Key rubber application uses for the new carbon black include: consumer applications, such as toys and child care items, sporting equipment, housing items, tools, clothing and accessories; products intended to be taken in the mouth or with foreseeable long and repeated short-term skin contact; components that have direct contact with drinking water, including hoses and liners in drinking water systems and pipes and tanks; and products that have contact with food, such as gaskets, O-rings, seals and food transportation belts.
