PITTSBURGH—Bareiss Prufgeratebau GmbH is a family-owned German firm that has been doing business in North America for some time, but one of its owners says the firm isn't well-known here.
But the Oberdischingen, Germany-based maker of a wide range of measuring devices hopes to change that, according to Oliver Wirth, general manager of Bareiss. He also is a managing director and co-owner of the company along with his cousin, Katrin Shen, who heads up sales and marketing.
"We've been selling in the U.S. a long time, but most of that was not under our brand," Wirth said at the recent ACS Rubber Division International Elastomer Conference in Pittsburgh. "Some resellers in the U.S. put their own sticker (brand) on it. We are around quite some time, but nobody knows it."
Geographically, about half of Bareiss' sales come from Germany, with another 25 percent coming from the rest of Europe, he said. That leaves just 25 percent for the rest of the world, including Asia and North America.
But that is starting to change some already, and should evolve even more in the future, Wirth said. It established offices in Hong Kong back in 2011 and China in 2012, along with Taiwan later in 2020. But its first North American office didn't come until 2018, when Bareiss USA Inc. was established in Arden, N.C., with Greg Skory as managing director. An office in Toronto opened earlier this year.
As part of that effort, Bareiss began to sell under its own name, and has started a campaign to raise its brand awareness. That includes attending shows like the IEC, along with ramped-up marketing and advertising.
Wirth said Bareiss also is starting to sell directly through these regional offices, rather than relying solely on selling through distribution.
"We have big hopes for the continent," he said. "We want to set up a calibration lab there as well so we can do service on our own devices in North America. We will have shorter lead times for re-calibration, which will give a huge boost to our North American customers."
