HERZOGENAURACH, Germany—Adidas has updated its Ultraboost running shoe with the introduction of Ultraboost 5. The company said this was designed to provide even more energy return than the previous models, in the biggest redesign of the line since it made its debut in 2015.
Adidas adds more Boost TPU to its Ultraboost running shoes
Key to the improved energy return is a new Boost midsole construction, which includes 9 millimeters more of the expanded TPU Boost material, originally developed in collaboration with BASF. The shoe also features a revamped upper.
The re-engineered Light Boost midsole has 9 millimeters more foam under the heel and forefoot. This, Adidas said, reduces weight while giving higher cushioning and increasing the forefoot energy by 2 percent compared to the Ultraboost Light 1 shoe. The midsole, it said, instantly bounces back to its original shape as the runner’s foot hits the ground. As a result, they can go further for the same amount of energy expended.
“The Ultraboost is a true running icon, and this is our best yet,” said Simon Lockett, director of Footwear Product Marketing Category at Adidas.
“[Eighty-two] percent of people that have tested it say they prefer its energy return to their own shoes, and 70 percent say they had more fun while running wearing it,” Lockett said. “That’s always been the superpower of Ultraboost, especially now it’s back with more Boost, and a lighter weight than ever before.”
Both men’s and women’s models are available, with a white and grey base with orange and pink color pops. They are available both in-store and online, priced at $180.
