ST. PAUL, Minn.—3M is adding to its Scotch-Weld structural acrylic adhesive portfolio with the addition of three new products the company says offer low odor, enhanced performance, high elongation and nylon bonding capability.
The brands making up this "next generation" of the Scotch-Weld portfolio include 3M Scotch-Weld Low Odor Acrylic Adhesive 8700NS Series, 3M Scotch-Weld Flexible Acrylic Adhesive 8600NS Series and 3M Scotch-Weld Nylon Bonder Structural Adhesive DP8910NS.
"Over the years, structural acrylic adhesives have steadily grown in popularity due to the numerous benefits they provide," 3M said in a Sept. 30 news release. "Their ability to cure quickly with limited surface preparation, bond to a variety of substrates, while also offering high temperature and high impact resistance has made acrylic adhesives a central product used by designers, engineers and manufacturers around the world."
Despite these advantages, the company said, there always is room for improvement for existing products. Product engineers continued to develop formulations that alleviate existing assembly challenges, 3M said, adding that these formulations were engineered specifically to allow for greater design flexibility.
The 3M Scotch-Weld Low Odor Acrylic Adhesive 8700NS Series is an improved acrylic formulation that maintains structural strength in cold temperatures, is low odor and has non-flammable classification to help enhance workplace safety, 3M said. It also provides a high strength solution to replace mechanical fasteners, while having the ability to bond to a wide variety of substrates including plastics, aluminum, stainless steel and active metals.
3M Scotch-Weld Flexible Acrylic Adhesive 8600NS Series is a new acrylic adhesive that provides the flexibility of a sealant combined with the strength and cure speed of an acrylic adhesive, according to the company. It also allows thin, flat surfaces to be bonded with limited surface distortion or bond line read-through. This new acrylic is also low odor and has non-flammable classification to help enhance workplace safety.
Finally, 3M Scotch-Weld Nylon Bonder Structural Adhesive DP8910NS ensures reliable adhesion to nylon (polyamides) substrates without plasma or flame treatment surface preparation, which helps reduce costs and production time, according to 3M, adding that the nylon bonder structural adhesive offers "excellent" adhesion in high temperature and high humidity environments and provides designers with more options by featuring the ability to bond to different metals, such as aluminum and stainless steel.
"At 3M, we are continuously working to identify innovative ways to enhance our products in order to make our customer's jobs simpler, safer and more efficient," said Brent White, 3M's global portfolio leader of the Industrial Adhesives & Tapes Division. "Through this expansion of the 3M Scotch-Weld Structural Acrylic Adhesives portfolio, we've specifically made advancements to the existing low odor acrylic adhesives, along with designing the new flexible acrylic adhesive and nylon bonder structural adhesives. The new formulations of these products address many gaps that can be associated with acrylic adhesives while improving upon them to make great products even better."
