SCHENECTADY, N.Y.—The U.S. Food & Drug Administration has granted an extension of existing approvals for SI Group's phosphite antioxidant Ultranox 626.
The approvals, effective June 25, allow use as a food contact substance in polypropylene homopolymers and copolymers under Conditions of Use A through H as listed in FCN 1988, according to an SI Group news release. The approval is specific to the material manufactured at SI Group's Morgantown, W.Va., facility.
The extension permits Ultranox's use in polypropylene food packaging and other food-contact applications, SI Group said.
The product has the highest phosphorous concentration among SI Group's secondary antioxidants, which allows it to be used at lower concentrations, said Rich Preziotti, a senior vice president and president of the additives unit. That results in low migration and volatile-content plastics, which align with food packaging producer and brand owner requirements.
Ultranox is a high-performance organophosphite antioxidant for use in homopolymers and copolymers of propylene and ethylene, SI Group said. It also is used in elastomers and engineering compounds, especially those that require color stability.
"We will continue to invest in the future of polymer additives that meet growing safety requirements," Preziotti said.
SI Group is a developer and manufacturer of performance additives, process solutions, pharmaceuticals and chemical intermediates.
