TIANJIN, China—Vitesco Technologies will strengthen its hybrid and electrical powertrain presence in Tianjin with the addition of a research and development center that complements the manufacturing operations already established in the city.
Set for completion in 2021, the 96,875-sq.-ft. R&D center will extend the development of zero-emission propulsion technologies for the Asia-Pacific region. It will house office space and a test lab. Vitesco recently signed an agreement with the Administration Committee of the Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area for the construction of the building.
"The new R&D center in Tianjin is another milestone for Vitesco Technologies," Yanfei Cao, head of the Electrification Technology business unit in Asia, said in a statement. "It will help us to forge even closer links to local customers in the world's largest automotive market and enable us to optimally support our customers in the development of vehicles with electrification technologies."
In October 2019, Vitesco's Tianjin plant began production of what it claims is the first fully integrated electric axle drive system for PSA and Hyundai. Compact and lightweight, Vitesco said the product is helping to make e-mobility more affordable and suitable for mass market.
Vitesco also has been working with other vehicle manufacturers to develop battery systems for electric cars that are set to launch in the coming months.
