HOUSTON—Orion S.A. is expanding its circular carbon black operations, adding tire pyrolysis oil tanks at its plant in Jaslo, Poland.
The international producer of specialty chemicals is installing several tanks as a reception point for TPO deliveries from its partners.
The project is part of Orion's efforts to increase production of more sustainable carbon black, while reducing tire waste by using scrap tires to produce the TPO.
"Our partnership with TPO producers underscores our shared commitment to sustainability and innovation," said Pedro Riveros, senior vice president of Global Rubber Carbon Black at Orion. "Through collective action, we are driving positive change across the industry value chain, from tire waste management to resource recovery."
The TPO will be pumped from the tanks in Jaslo to its nearby furnace black reactors, which then transform the oil into circular carbon black.
Orion says it is the only supplier in the CB space that has made CB from 100-percent TPO. Its circular grades are applicable to a wide range of products.
"The circular process addresses a major challenge for the tire industry, which has long tried to develop ways to recycle old tires and mitigate the environmental burden caused by tire waste," Orion stated in a June 11 release.
Orion has partnered with other companies to promote environmental stewardship.
Orion maintains four innovation centers and produces CB at 15 plants worldwide, offering a variety of production processes. The company's history goes back more than 160 years to its origins in Germany.
