SALTEN, Norway—Norwegian silicon supplier Elkem has opened a new energy recovery plant in Salten in the northern part of the country, marking another milestone for the company on its road toward greenhouse gas reduction.
According to a Nov. 15 press release from Elkem, the facility will recover about 28 percent of the electricity used at the plant, "equal to the power of about 15,000 Norwegian households."
"Elkem aims to be part of the solution to combat climate change—and to be one of the winners in the green transition," said Elkem CEO Helge Aasen. "The new energy recovery plant at Elkem Salten, developed together with our partners in Kvitebjorn Energi and with financial support from Enova, further strengthens our efforts to ensure environmentally friendly silicon and ferrosilicon production with the lowest possible emissions and lowest possible use of resources."
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store Nov. 15 attended the grand opening of the plant, which represents a $136.1 million investment for Elkem.
An initial $28.4 million grant from Norwegian government funding agency Enova will assist Elkem in its initial operations.
The company will focus on reducing its CO2 emissions between now and 2031 by 28 percent.
