Bridgestone opens new wet handling track in Italy

ROME—Bridgestone Europe Middle East India & Africa (EMIA) has opened a new wet handling track at its proving ground just outside the Italian capital of Rome.

The $3.5 million track will enable the Japanese tire maker "to rigorously test" its tires, helping ensure optimal wet performance, said Bridgestone Feb. 1.

Initially designed in a virtual environment, the track was built taking into consideration both traditional vehicle manufacturers and new electrical vehicle players.

Bridgestone said it analyzed feedback and data collected from vehicle manufacturers and proving ground drivers during the design of the track.

The system enables test drivers to be informed in real time with safety prevention warnings.

In addition, the tire maker created virtual simulations to include features such as a new surface, an enhanced layout and more efficient water management.

The surface of the track was designed in association with Pisa University, incorporating "carefully selected aggregates" that are more resilient to wear.

This, Bridgestone said, is particularly beneficial when it comes to consistency over time, helping to deliver constant friction and enhanced grip levels.

Furthermore, the virtual development of the track offered significant sustainability benefits, since the process allowed for a more efficient use of resources.

A new water system utilizing 6 km (3.7 miles) of piping can move water back to a 4-million liter reservoir, helping to recycle up to 90 percent of water, Bridgestone added.

To increase safety, the tire maker said it used clay material Argex in run-off areas to help reduce stopping distances where most necessary.

In addition, the company introduced a new security management system at the proving ground, which allows for "fully digital and automated control of the tracks at the facility."
