ACC appoints vice president of sustainability

WASHINGTON—The American Chemistry Council has appointed Mitchell Toomey as vice president of sustainability and responsible care.

In this position, Toomey will be tasked with "strengthening (the) industry's role as a solutions provider across several key areas," according to the ACC's Aug. 16 news release.

These key areas include monitoring and improving air quality, conserving and protecting drinking water, increasing product and process safety, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, expanding recycling, and creating a more diverse workforce.

Toomey joins the organization from BASF S.E., where he was director of sustainability.

His work at BASF included leading a team that worked across 12 businesses to embed sustainability into the company's business strategies. This included long-term renewable power purchasing agreements and non-fossil feedstocks. Prior to this, he worked at the United Nations, promoting global social responsibility and sustainability.

"Mitch is a proven leader who shares ACC's vision for a cleaner, safer and healthier future," said Chris Jahn, ACC president and CEO.

"His decades of experience embedded in sustainability issues—both for industry and on the intergovernmental side—are essential to helping bring our industry closer to achieving its ambitious environmental, health, safety and sustainability goals."
