HANOVER, Germany—Jorge Almeida, a 28-year veteran of Continental A.G. with experience in a number of roles, has replaced Claus Petschick as head of sustainability in the tire group.
The promotion took effect May 1, according to Continental. Petschick is retiring after more than three decades with Continental.
Almeida will report to Christian Kotz, head of the tire group and a member of the executive board at Conti.
"I would like to expressly thank Claus Petschick for his outstanding commitment," Kotz said. "He strategically realigned and drove forward our sustainability activities. Our comprehensive sustainability strategy bears his signature."
Kotz added that responsibility for the sustainability policy now lies with Almeida.
"We want to become the most progressive tire manufacturer in terms of environmental and social responsibility," Kotz said. "Jorge Almeida will now consistently develop our sustainability strategy and ensure its global implementation.
"He can build on a broad foundation and the strong support of our highly motivated tires team. I wish him all the best and every success in his new role."
Almeida will be charged with strategic planning and global sustainability management as the company takes a holistic approach to a greener future, according to Conti.
This includes responsible sourcing of natural rubber and other raw materials, and increased recycling of end-of-life tires.
Almeida has worked in finance, HR, purchasing, and most recently, as director of the tire group in the Andina Region (Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru and Venezuela).
He also served as head of purchasing and strategic sourcing for rubber.
Continental has a stated goal of becoming the "most progressive tire manufacturer by 2030." Sustainable business has been at the forefront of the tire manufacturer's corporate strategy for many years already.
The focus is on climate change mitigation, low-emission transportation, a circular economy and responsible supply chains.
Founded in 1871, Continental generated sales of more than $42 billion in 2022, employing around 200,000 people in 57 countries and markets.
The tire group has 24 production and development locations and posted net sales of $16 billion in 2022.
The portfolio for the world's fourth-largest tire maker includes services for the tire trade and fleet applications, as well as digital management systems for tires.
