Reduce Raw Material Variation by Using Rheometry

Wednesday, October 04, 2023

Rubber and polymer processing can pose several challenges. From batch to batch a lot can happen to cause variations in your product. Something as simple as humidity, or the mixing speed can change key properties in a batch, which could cause issues in your finished product.

This webinar will outline the different test methods to help gain control of your raw materials and reduce variation from batch to batch and from supplier to supplier. We’ll also be providing real-world case studies where we’ve helped others reduce variation, identify supplier issues, and incorporate processes so that it doesn’t happen again.

Companies in the plastics and rubber industries can't afford to sit on the sideline; they need to know how PFAS bans and regulations will impact them. The European Union is looking at a regulatory proposal that conceivably could ban all PFAS, the U.S. EPA is stepping up its activity, and some U.S. states are considering their own PFAS regulations. In addition, we’ve reported on litigation resulting in multi-billion dollar awards and settlements.

Our PFAS Live editorial livestream will look at current and likely future PFAS regulations and how they will likely impact companies in the plastics and rubber supply chains. Sectors include packaging, automotive, industrial, medical, recycling and more. The program will be moderated by Bruce Meyer, editor of Rubber News who has covered recent developments in depth. Confirmed speakers include Jay West, senior director, chemical products and technology at the American Chemistry Council, and Peter Schmitt, an expert on health care packaging and managing director of Montesino Associates.

The livestream is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 26, and will be promoted to readers of Plastics News, Rubber News and Sustainable Plastics.

For more information about PFAS, see Bruce’s coverage in RN and PN, and read this column:

Overcoming Processing Challenges Part 1 — Formulate Without Compromise

Wednesday, September 13, 2023

Cutting-edge, high-performance materials are in development and being adopted to meet today’s and future demands, spanning product durability, fuel economy, and safety, including traction and braking. Sustainability also stands as a paramount objective for most tire and rubber companies. Enter SureMix®, an innovative class of biocarbon-based performance process aids that allow compounders to achieve uncompromised formulations.

Tire producers are adopting advanced solutions like functional polymers, higher surface area fillers, and increased silica loadings to expand the performance envelope, leading the charge for safer, eco-friendly mobility. However, these approaches often require extended mixing times and experience downstream complexities, spotlighting high-viscosity challenges in high-performance rubber compounds. As the next-gen materials are commercialized, particularly functional polymers, polymer viscosities that soar past 150 MU amplify this concern.

In this webinar, we will focus on how to mitigate the challenges of higher Silica content and higher Mooney viscosity functional solution SBR polymers. Polymer Solutions Group developed SureMix® performance-optimizing process additives that enhance processability, reduce mix-passes or cycle times, and improve extrusion smoothness, all while maintaining modulus and tensile properties and optimizing dynamic characteristics.

Join our industry experts for this transformative webinar and unlock the power of SureMix®.

Improvement in Process Stability of Silica Tread Compounds: How the Novel Chemistry of SureMix® S6 Can Protect a Silica Filled Tread Compound from Process Upsets & High Temperatures

Wednesday, June 07, 2023

Tire companies are incorporating higher levels of silica into tread compounds to meet evolving performance requirements. The utilization of higher silica levels offers advantages such as improved wet traction, wear resistance, and handling. However, there are challenges associated with achieving these enhanced properties, including increased viscosity, processing difficulties, and reduced fuel economy. Furthermore, higher temperature silanization has been found to improve wear and fuel economy but exacerbate viscosity issues. Any disruptions or delays in the process can be detrimental to the silanization reaction, as it is highly sensitive to time and temperature. In such cases, the compound may experience pre-scorch, resulting in batch variability and increased scrap levels.

SureMix® S6, developed by Polymer Solutions Group, is a performance-optimizing process additive that addresses these challenges. It effectively enhances processability, reduces the number of mix-passes or cycle times, and improves extrusion smoothness, all while maintaining modulus, tensile properties, and optimizing dynamic characteristics. In this study, the compounds were subjected to high-temperature silanization to simulate mixing or process upsets. The results demonstrate the effective use of SureMix® S6 in maintaining processability, reducing scrap, and optimizing compound performance. Additionally, combining high-temperature silanization with SureMix® sets a new benchmark for performance.
