New products: Trelleborg's Xplor seals designed for safety, durability

FORT WAYNE, Ind.—Trelleborg Sealing Solutions is pushing to market a new spring-energized, high-pressure seal for the oil and gas industry, single-piece components that can make installation safer and increase performance, the company said.

The seals, with the brand names Xplor S-Seal and Xplor FS-Seal, "offer maximum extrusion resistance" and can withstand extensive pressure and temperature ranges.

"Our new (seals) combine the benefits of integral support components with the flexibility of an elastomer seal in static applications," said James Simpson, global segment director, oil and gas and energy. "These seals are ... engineered to make installation easier and safer."

The Xplor seals feature corrosion-resistant, metallic anti-extrusion springs built into the mold and can operate anywhere between -45°C and 260°C in the harsh environments of the oil and gas world, providing protection against rapid gas decompression and sour gas.

"Optimal stress distribution throughout the elastomer body was modeled through Finite Element Analysis to ensure our products provide high performance sealing coupled with a long seal life," Simpson said. "Extrusion resistance is provided by specially designed integral anti-extrusion springs; they provide support to the elastomer and are flexible to allow straightforward installation."

Trelleborg offers a choice with the seals to "overwind the springs (which increases the sealing effect) with a polyetheretherketone or carbon fiber composite material to meet specific pressure requirements."
