PITTSBURGH—Liberty Tire Recycling has introduced SmartMIX, a dry-mix rubber additive for high-performance asphalt paving.
Produced with next-generation technology, SmartMIX is an easy-to-use material that enhances any asphalt mix for improved compaction, flexibility and durability, the company said.
SmartMIX is made entirely from recycled tires and eliminates the need for liquid modifiers, according to Liberty Tire. The material has been field-tested and proven in both hot and cold climates, and it reduces significantly the per-ton cost of using rubberized asphalt, it said. It also provides a reduction of up to 50 percent in modifier costs, it said.
"SmartMIX is Liberty's most recent solution to capitalize on the inherent value of a scrap tire," said Liberty Tire CEO Thomas Womble.
Recycling only four tires reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 323 pounds, and one lane-mile of rubberized asphalt can utilize 1,600 tires, Womble said.
SmartMIX matches the performance of other rubber-modified asphalt mixes, but at a lower cost and with less waste, according to Liberty Tire.
It is easy to use and transport, is durable and flexible, and can be used for both large and small paving jobs, it said.
