RICHMOND, Va.—The CHT Group has introduced the SilSo Clear 21002, a platinum cure, highly transparent liquid silicone rubber designed for injection molding applications.
Due to its non-yellowing properties, the SilSo Clear 21002 is ideal for optical applications such as lenses, light guides and LEDs, the company said in a release.
Its resistance to ultraviolet, temperature and moisture enables it to perform under environmental conditions of automotive and outdoor lighting applications. CHT said SilSo Clear 21002 has been subject to more than 5,000 hours of UV and thermal accelerated aging testing with excellent results.
The material is low viscosity and fast curing, making it ideal for pour-in-place or injection molding, according to Phil McDermott CHT's chief technology officer.
"The ease of processing coupled with excellent physical properties and remarkably stable optics affords an ideal choice for challenging optical applications," he said in the release.
Silso Clear 21002 is a lightweight alternative to glass and has a wider temperature range and superior flexibility to other polymers traditionally used for optical applications, such as polycarbonate and polymethyl methacrylate, the company said.
The cured silicone retains high transparency even in thick-walled geometries. It also is abrasion-resistant and will perform as a protective barrier against moisture and debris when cased over LEDs.
