The United Auto Workers union will again expand its strike against the Detroit 3 on Sept. 29 "barring serious progress" at the bargaining table, according to a source familiar with the union's plans.
As he did at a week earlier, UAW President Shawn Fain is expected to appear on Facebook Live at 10 a.m. Friday to announce the next wave of plants where workers will be ordered to walk out, effective at noon that day.
Talks remain active with all three companies. Union negotiators were expected to meet with General Motors late afternoon Sept. 27, according to a person familiar with the plans.
The strike began Sept. 15 at three large assembly plants, moments after the UAW's contracts with the automakers expired. Last week, Fain expanded the work stoppage to 38 GM and Stellantis parts distribution facilities across 20 states. Nearly 19,000 of the 146,000 UAW members at the Detroit 3 are currently on strike.
Fain did not send any additional Ford workers onto picket lines last week, saying the union had made "real progress" with that company.
