GREENVILLE, S.C.—Happy (belated) National Check Your Wipers Day!
Michelin North America Inc. worked to introduce National Check Your Wipers Day as a way to help drivers prepare for the holiday travel season. The National Day Calendar set the day to be observed annually on Nov. 16.
This is the first year it was recognized.
"The change of seasons and start of holiday travel is the perfect time for drivers to start thinking about the condition of their vehicle's wiper blades," Tom Jupena, director of brand licensing for Michelin North America, said in a statement. "We are proud to declare an annual National Check Your Wipers Day to educate and remind drivers and their families to be prepared for weather on the road and be ready with optimal driving visibility."
Michelin recommends changing your wipers every six to 12 months, depending on the vehicle's location and how often it's driven.
Ensuring proper visibility is important for driver safety. In a news release, Michelin notes that data the U.S. Department of Transportation indicates that about 1-in-4 accidents are caused by weather-related conditions.
In a survey it conducted, Michelin Wiper Blades found that 92 percent of drivers agree that poor wiper blades can affect their driving ability. However, 90 percent of drivers do not plan the time to check their wipers properly and more than 55 percent do not know how to check their wiper blades properly.
Michelin is hoping National Check Your Wipers Day can help change that.
