SEOUL, South Korea—Hankook Tire & Technology Co. Ltd. has agreed to work with Korean vehicle maker Hyundai Motor Group to develop mobility solutions services using data sourced from connected vehicles.
The companies signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on March 11 covering the scope of their cooperation, which commits them to build a system to exchange data and technologies needed to develop a mobility solution for vehicle operation and management.
According to the MoU, Hyundai Motor—which controls the Hyundai and Kia brands—will share its open vehicle data platform and data from connected cars while Hankook will share tire-related data and tire-condition checking technologies. The companies will use these data to develop a solution to measure and predict tire wear and conditions precisely.
In addition, the partners will analyze and process shared and collected data to develop a tire-management service that would notify the vehicle user when to replace a tire. They also plan to study how tire wear and condition changes affect a vehicle's performance, fuel efficiency and safety.
Hankook, with Hyundai Motor and Kia, will be able to provide a solution for overall vehicle operation and management that gives customized notifications and provides information for safe driving and will also be able to find a new business model.
