DuPont develops new cooling technology for EV batteries

GENEVA, Switzerland—DuPont Mobility & Materials (M&M) has introduced a new technology for extrusion of multilayer cooling lines positioned inside and outside the high voltage battery pack of electric vehicles.

Called eCool, DuPont said the technology will address challenges around increased cooling line requirements to manage heat and energy in EV batteries and optimize the operation, safety and range.

The new technology is based on the company's Zytel LCPA long chain polyamide grades co-extruded with thermoplastic olefin elastomer.

This "presents an attractive alternative to current, heavier options such as thick EPDM rubber hoses and other thermoplastic assemblies," DuPont claimed.

"The eCool solution not only removes weight but also better resists a wide range of EV cooling fluids while remaining cost competitive."

Moreover, it added, the technology can reduce global warming potential of cooling tubes by over half compared to monolayer PA12 tubes.

"With our eCool solution, we offer the industry a high-performance, flexible and more sustainable solution that is also cost competitive," said Laurent Lefebvre, global marketing director, automotive, DuPont M&M.
