WASHINGTON—Seven tire makers have won 2019 Sustainability Awards for Safety and Health from the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association.
The USTMA honored its members for outstanding advances in occupational health and safety, the association said.
"USTMA members share an aspirational vision for the U.S. tire manufacturing industry of zero injuries and illnesses in the workplace," said USTMA President and CEO Anne Forristall Luke regarding the Sustainability Awards.
The USTMA—then known as the Rubber Manufacturers Association—created its Safety and Health Improvement Program (SHIP) in 1981. In 2018, it renamed and expanded the program, to better recognize the proactive steps USTMA members have taken to improve workplace safety and health, the association said.
In deciding the awards, the USTMA surveyed 49 plants involved in manufacturing tires, tread rubber and inner tubes, according to an association press release issued April 4.
Bridgestone Americas, Goodyear and Michelin North America Inc. won the 2019 Leadership Award, recognizing tire makers that share successful safety initiatives with other USTMA members.
Michelin and Bridgestone also won the Innovation Award, which recognizes companies that implement proactive programs, technologies or systems to improve workplace safety and health.
The annual Excellence Awards go to individual facilities that have serious injury and illness rates at least 75 percent better than the industry average. In 2019, those awards went to the Michelin plants in Greenville, S.C., and Dothan, Ala.; the Pirelli Tire North America plant in Rome, Ga.; and the Yokohama Tire Corp. plant in West Point, Miss.
The Improvement Awards go to facilities that have at least a 10-percent improvement over the previous year and also exceed the industry average. In 2019, those plants were:
- Bridgestone: Graniteville, S.C. (two plants); Morrison, Tenn.; Russellville, Ark.
- Cooper Tire & Rubber Co.: Tupelo, Miss.
- Michelin: Greenville, S.C. (two plants); Starr, S.C.; Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Covington, Ga.
- Toyo Tire Holdings of Americas Inc.: White, Ga.
