BRUSSELS—The European Tyre and Rubber Manufacturers' Association praised the European Parliament committee for endorsing revised European Union tire pressure monitoring systems rules. The regulation updates existing vehicle safety rules to extend TPMS requirements to light and heavy commercial vehicles, trailers and buses.
The IMCO Committee of the European Parliament endorsed the measure April 2, according to an ETRMA press release.
"This is an important move toward safer roads and lower energy consumption," ETRMA Secretary General Fazilet Cinaralp said. "TPMS has been mandatory in the EU for passenger cars since 2014, and the inclusion of commercial vehicles is an important step forward."
The ETRMA cited market surveys showing that heavy-duty vehicles drive 40-65 percent of their distance of their distance traveled on underinflated tires and 10-25 percent on tires underinflated by more than 10 percent.
