WASHINGTON—Interested parties have until May 21 to submit comments to the U.S. Department of Labor on the agency's proposed changes to overtime pay regulations.
The Labor Department estimates that its proposal will add more than 1 million workers to the total eligible for overtime pay.
Under current federal law established in 2004, employees with a salary below $455 per week ($23,600 per year) must be paid overtime if they work more than 40 hours per week. Workers making at least that much may be eligible for overtime, depending on their duties.
The proposal from Labor would increase the threshold to $679 per week, or $35,308 annually, with eligibility above that threshold again based on job duties.
Commenters may file their thoughts on the regulation electronically at regulations.gov, referencing Docket No. RIN 1235-AA20. More information on the proposed rule may be found at dol.gov/whd/overtime2019.
