MEMPHIS, Tenn.—The City of Memphis has brought back its Tire Redemption Program as a way of reducing the amount of illegal scrap tire dumping in the area, according to a press release.
The city collected tires Jan. 9 and 10 at Refurban, 1029 Florida St. in Memphis. City residents were paid $1 for each tire they brought to the site, with a limit of 250 tires per donation.
According to its website, Refurban "creates innovative partnerships to redirect leftover resources and stimulate local economies."
Its waste redirection solutions offset the operational cost of its Waste Redirection Initiative, which trains and employs ex-felons, at-risk youth and retuning veterans to sort, recycle and repurpose usable materials, it said.
